Title contenders Dhaka Abahani started their season with an unimpressive 1-0 victory over Bangladesh Police in a group D match of the Citycell Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National stadium on Sunday. In the other match of the day, Mutkijoddha shared the points with a 1-1 draw against Chittagong Abahani at the same venue. The start studded Abahani with their two foreign recruits, forward Awudu Ibrahimn and defender Samad Yousif, hardly showed their superiority over the spirited Police outfit who sometimes fought neck and neck with their opponents. The attacking line of the Abahani comprising Enamul, Uzzal and Awudu lacked the cohesion in the first outing of the season. Another forward Robin missed out on the opener due to fever. However, Abahani were unfortunate as three of their efforts in the second half came back off the woodwork. Abahani pushed forward in search of a goal from the very beginning but found the opposition harder than what they had anticipated. However, midfielder Pranatosh’s header from a Motiur Munna free-kick from the left flank in the 15th minute put Abahani ahead. Abahani continued the attacking tactic but the goal remained a far cry. They were fortunate in the 22nd minute when Nazmul Hossain’s header after a combined attack hit the woodwork with Biplob rooted at the far post. Earlier, Biplob punched a Robin free-kick to safety in the 14th minute. Abahani midfielder Uzzal broke through the defence in the 30th minute but with only the Police goalkeeper to beat he put the ball straight into the shot-stopper’s lap. The second half was dominated by Abahani but another goal remained out of their reach. Awudu hit the sidepost from close range in the 57th minute, Rajani’s shot crashed against the crossbar in the 75th minute and Samad also saw his header hit the woodwork in the 85th minute. In the day’s first match, Tipu’s cleverly taken placing shot from a Kanchan cross put Muktijoddha ahead in the second minute but just two minutes later Masud Alam of Chittagong Abahani restored parity after a combined attack. Both the teams wasted a number of chances in the remaining time of the match.
